Specialvideo presents an automated multifunctional bench equipped with a vision system designed for quality control of engravings and reliefs. The case study presented applies inspection to aluminum sheets, but the same technology can also inspect other materials and implement various checks, thanks to special directional sector lighting.

System functions

The proposed vision system is made up of two “stations” that collaborate with each other:
The first consists of a “fixed” camera positioned from above that frames the entire product being inspected. Equipped with special illuminators, it can locate the various sub-parts of the sample being inspected.

The vision system then controls the automated multifunction bench to move the second viewing station to each of the identified subparts. This “mobile” station is composed of a very high-resolution camera with a local field of view suitable for framing the individual subpart. It also features a programmable sector illuminator which, combined with special enhancement algorithms, ultimately allows for high-contrast rendering of non-through engravings and surface reliefs, as well as detecting through engravings.

The solution is available in two versions: one for collaborative laboratory use at low speeds; the other for in-line use at high production speeds. The system is suitable for both matte and glossy products, and screen-printed and non-screen-printed surfaces.

The illuminator is equipped with LEDs of different bands that can be activated independently in order to best adapt to the type and material of the product being processed.
The automated multifunction bench is designed for laboratory applications in collaborative mode, i.e. at reduced speed and with all the safety features and precautions to make it safe for operators even without the installation of protective casings or photoelectric barriers.
Alternatively, it is offered with high speed and possibly complete with safety barriers for use on production lines.

The multifunctional bench designed allows for the acquisition of products with a maximum size of 500x300mm and, thanks to the mobile camera, achieves resolutions of 0.01mm/pixel with a local field of view of 45x45mm. Configurations for greater extensions, resolutions, and speeds can be studied upon request.

The bench is equipped with a manually (or optionally automatically) closing door that allows the product to be clamped and kept flat on the support surface, correcting any creases present, for example when the product is a partially cut metal sheet.

The system can generate reports, statistics, and/or image archives on the company network. Furthermore, simplified tracking of the sample being inspected can be managed through the manual or automatic entry of data such as batch, order, etc., also through barcode scanning.

Defect detection

The system is able to perform the following checks:

  • Presence/absence and/or dimensional conformity of surface engravings/reliefs
  • Presence of surface defects such as scratches, dents, etc.
  • Screen printing quality control
  • Matching the expected model

Technical features

  • Automated multifunctional counter measuring 900x1000x H1500mm
  • Fixed “Global FoV” camera with fixed illumination system
  • High resolution “Local FoV” mobile camera with multi-band sector illumination system
  • Operator monitor and keyboard

Electrical panel containing the following components:

  • Drives and controllers of the automated multifunction bench
  • Industrial PC with vision software
  • Vision calibration patterns with automation
  • Alarm signals and safety devices for operators

Application to other products

In this vision system, Specialvideo has implemented an image acquisition technology with a programmable sector illuminator, also tested on surfaces made of materials other than metal.

For example, the plastic surface of a pharmaceutical blister pack is captured in extremely high definition. High-quality images like the one shown in the example are suitable for developing multiple automatic checks according to the customer’s specific needs.
